Token Issues & Troubleshooting

Resolve token validation errors, copy/paste issues, and permission problems.

Common Token Problems

Token issues are usually easy to fix once you know what to look for. Here are the most common problems and their solutions.

Token Validation Errors

  1. 1Make sure you copied the entire token without any extra spaces
  2. 2Check that the token hasn't expired (set a longer expiration if needed)
  3. 3Verify you're using the token from the correct Canvas instance
  4. 4Ensure the token was generated with the right account type (parent vs student)
  5. 5Try generating a new token if the current one isn't working
  6. 6Contact your school's IT if you continue having authorization issues

Copy/Paste Issues

When copying your token, select all the text carefully. Tokens are long strings that can easily get cut off. Use Ctrl+A (or Cmd+A on Mac) to select all, then copy to ensure you get the complete token.

Permission Denied Errors

If you get "Permission Denied" errors, check with your school's IT department. Some schools have additional security policies that require manual approval for third-party integrations.

Token Format

Valid Canvas tokens are typically 70+ characters long and contain a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. If your token is much shorter or contains only numbers, it might not be a Canvas API token.

Testing Your Token

You can test if your token works by logging into Canvas and checking if you can access your courses and grades normally. If Canvas itself isn't working, the token won't work either.
