Connection Types Explained

Understanding the difference between parent and student access tokens and when to use each.

Parent vs Student Access

Canvas offers different types of access depending on your relationship to the student. Understanding which type to use ensures you get the appropriate level of access to your student's academic information.

Parent Access Token

  1. 1Use when you are the parent or guardian of the student
  2. 2Provides access to grades, assignments, and announcements
  3. 3May require additional verification depending on school policy
  4. 4Allows you to view all information the parent portal provides
  5. 5Some schools may require you to be added as an observer first

Student Access Token

  1. 1Use when the student is generating their own token
  2. 2Provides full access to the student's Canvas account
  3. 3Student must be 18+ or have parental permission
  4. 4Includes access to all courses, grades, and communications
  5. 5Best option for students who want to share their data with parents

Which Should I Choose?

If you're a parent of a minor student, start with "Parent Access Token". If your student is 18+ and generating their own token to share with you, choose "Student Access Token".

Permission Issues?

If you get permission errors, make sure you're using the correct token type. Some schools require parents to be explicitly added as observers before parent tokens will work.
